Jonah Simmons is a sculptor from California and he creates mixed media sculptures. Babies, faces, teeth, amputees, disfigurements, blood, otherworldly figures, and a variety of emotions are some of the features one may find in his work. Jonah’s body of work explores the human condition, delving into topics of psychology, birth, and death. Often the work places the viewer into an uncomfortable situation, forcing them to step out of their comfort zone, and challenging their values and beliefs. Elements of his work are horrifying, which are created to evoke feelings of terror.
Jonah is inspired by many artists, books, films and stories, particularly ones that involve horror. He enjoys the imagery and themes of phobias, philias, death, decay, decadence, gluttony, beauty, deformity, religion, sexuality, and all that explore the grotesque and the macabre. In addition, he is inspired by the reaction and feelings of people being grossed out, creeped out, in dread, shocked, and uneasy. Work that has punctum.
Jonah finds inspiration in the subconscious, creating works through an intuitive process. He also creates work through a conceptual process as well. Jonah’s work is created based on his tastes. He makes art that one would find his house decorated with, a creepy decor, a museum aesthetic; Jonah’s Museum of Curiosities!
